A lot of guitars can look very similar from the front. The real test for an instruments cosmetic is when you turn them round and look at the back. Inspired by Italian marquetry techniques, the Java guitars have an Amara Ebony back and sides with a contrasting strip of Spalted Mango timber defining the back of the instrument and making the Java series really stand out from the crowd. Models come in Travel, Orchestra, Parlour, Dreadnought and Super Folk with the Electro models fitted with Fishman Presys EQ systems and Solid Canadian Cedar tops.

This outstanding model is a global best seller, and one look at the pictures can tell you why. We take Himalayan Spruce and marry that to a back and sides of highly figured Pacific Walnut tonewood to give a look and a sound that is hard to beat at any price. Our popular Super Folk Cutaway is the choice of body style for this model and we fit an onboard EX4 EQ system to each guitar to make them stage or studio ready. We brace the guitars carefully to give rich tonal variety and we genuinely aren’t sure if they look their best from the front, with their hand inlaid timber rosettes or from the back, with their highly figured walnut grain patterns. Maybe you decide?

Tanglewood recognise that to introduce people to music an instrument must have a high build quality, good playability, attractive cosmetics and as many features as possible to encourage and reward aspiring musicians. Using this design brief, Tanglewood luthiers created the Discovery Exotic series, a whole range of genuine musical instruments which feature 4 band EQ systems with stage backlighting, delicate 2mm fingerboard dots, black soft touch machine head buttons and understated sound hole rosettes. All these features are aimed at bringing the specification of a much more expensive instrument into the entry level market.

The Crossroads series pays homage to the style and sound of classic instruments from 1930’s America. Michael Sanden selected the timbers, making the tops a precise measurement so they flex and respond to the players attack. He then braced the instrument with his own patterns to give each guitar its own personality. He wanted to make a guitar that would have the sound that any musician, professional or amateur could appreciate. To make the guitar look authentic to the 1930’s era, Michael added a dark stain to the timbers that we call Whiskey Barrel to make the Crossroads look historic and simply elegant.

Parlour guitars, with their diminutive physical dimensions and vintage styling always stand out on a retailers wall, but in reality, this was  the original acoustic body shape for scores of years, Dreadnought and Folk and other variants didn’t appear until many years after the Parlour, so they are not quite as rare as we often think. To compliment the heritage of the parlour shape, we marry a Canadian Spruce top, with Indonesian Mahogany, ensuring we have a great tone, then we brace the top as we would a folk model, so that we get a tremendous sound projection. This model has an onboard Tanglewood EX4 EQ system, with 4 band graphic, so it can be used live or in the studio, and if you zoom in on the picture you will note the lovely hand inlaid genuine timber rosette which we think finishes the instrument off perfectly. A classic shape for the discerning player.

Inspired by nature and the raw beauty of classic timber, Roadster II instruments make a truly organic and understated natural statement. We’ve long pioneered the practise of sustainable forestry in the pursuit of our art and for this latest Roadster series we match finely graded Canadian Spruce tops with traditional Indonesian mahogany back and sides to produce tonally rich instruments that sound instantly wonderful tuned up right out of the box. We call them Roadster because to us, their cosmetic appeal evokes a sense of being close to nature… just as driving a classic open top car with the wind in your hair! Our luthiers have to work especially hard in creating this look, finishing the smooth edging joins of the body very carefully because there is no binding added to the body of these models, therefore no margin for error. Roadster II Spruce tops are finished and sealed in high grade, low density satin lacquer and as well as capturing the stripped down raw timber cosmetic effect we envisaged on the drawing board, we are sure this also adds to their sweet sounding sonic appeal.

Our classic dreadnought is inspired by the instrument shape so revered across musical generations. From Elvis to the Eagles, Led Zeppelin to Clapton, so many great songs have been written and immortalised on instruments of this body style, so we have to always have this model available to meet demand. We use a Canadian Spruce top, braced in a tapered system with quarter sawn spruce, to give an instant aural appeal straight out of the box. We maintain the classically understated natural look of the instrument in our styling, and it’s one of the few model ranges we have that looks both contemporary yet slightly vintage at the same time. Choose this model if your a traditionalist and like understated elegance.
