Tanglewood recognise that to introduce people to music an instrument must have a high build quality, good playability, attractive cosmetics and as many features as possible to encourage and reward aspiring musicians. Using this design brief, Tanglewood luthiers created the Discovery Exotic series, a whole range of genuine musical instruments which feature 4 band EQ systems with stage backlighting, delicate 2mm fingerboard dots, black soft touch machine head buttons and understated sound hole rosettes. All these features are aimed at bringing the specification of a much more expensive instrument into the entry level market.

Inspired by nature and the raw beauty of classic timber, Roadster II instruments make a truly organic and understated natural statement. We’ve long pioneered the practise of sustainable forestry in the pursuit of our art and for this latest Roadster series we match finely graded Canadian Red Cedar tops with traditional Indonesian mahogany back and sides to produce tonally rich instruments that sound instantly wonderful tuned up right out of the box. We call them Roadster because to us, their cosmetic appeal evokes a sense of being close to nature… just as driving a classic open top car with the wind in your hair! Our luthiers have to work especially hard in creating this look, finishing the smooth edging joins of the body very carefully because there is no binding added to the body of these models, therefore no margin for error. Roadster II Cedar tops are finished and sealed in high grade, low density satin lacquer and as well as capturing the stripped down raw timber cosmetic effect we envisaged on the drawing board, we are sure this also adds to their sweet sounding sonic appeal.

The Crossroads series pays homage to the style and sound of classic instruments from 1930’s America. Michael Sanden selected the timbers, making the tops a precise measurement so they flex and respond to the players attack. He then braced the instrument with his own patterns to give each guitar its own personality. He wanted to make a guitar that would have the sound that any musician, professional or amateur could appreciate. To make the guitar look authentic to the 1930’s era, Michael added a dark stain to the timbers that we call Whiskey Barrel to make the Crossroads look historic and simply elegant.
